3GTV in our grocery stores??

http://www.marketingpilgrim.com/2011/06/3gtv-launches-first-smart-grocery-store.html

This blogger, Cynthia Boris, discusses some of the perks of the new "Smart" grocery store and the benefits not only to the customer, but as a new way of marketing.  My first thought was it seems a little silly, but considering the effects of DVR (now I skip most commercials) as well as my ability to "unsubscribe" from email marketing, it may be the next best option for marketing these items.  And, while I may not find quick tips on creating new meals useful (in her example, she used adding salsa to mac n' cheese) since I plan my meals before leaving the house and as a foodie, I prefer more complicated and healthy meals, I do see the benefit or potential opportunities that can come with 3GTV capabilities such as being able to get coupons while I'm in the store or even watching cooking demonstrations, which I love!

1.  What are your initial thoughts on "Smart" grocery stores?  Would you find this tool useful while shopping?

2. Do you see any possible problems or issues that may arise with this type of marketing?

3.  What improvements or opportunities would you suggest to make 3GTV beneficial to the marketer and/or to the customer?

  1. i guess smart grocery stores could be a good ideal... i like the notion of getting instant coupons... but im sorta like you amber, when i go to the grocery store i already have everything written down on a list, when the price of the item and im not spending more than that... so i guess i say this is a good ideal sorta becasue i feel like im not going to buy something i've just seen advertised in a grocery store unless it's free! price is my greatest motivator to buy something....

problem... i see... is that like for example they used in the article(and you also mentioned) about buying the pace salsa to add to the macaroni and cheese to give it a mexican 'kick' well lets say i saw this ad in the grocery store and i decided it was a neat ideal and i wanted to do it... well the problem is that im not going to buy the pace salsa specifically especially if their is a generic brand that is much cheaper!!!! so in a way its given me a new technique/ideal, but im not going to buy the brand they suggest when there is a cheaper option so in a way the companies are wasting their money ...

ummm people love free stuff and sample... try to incorporate this or some kinda deal like buy 2 get 3 free or something like that to people who are loyal to the 3GTV experience... idk.... just a suggestion....

  2. Anna, I am just like you. I am always looking for the best deal (unless, I simply prefer a specific brand for some reason). So, if I were going to buy salsa based on a recipe I saw in the store, I too would buy the type and price I prefer rather than the type advertised to me.

I do like the idea of samples. Whenever Whole Foods has samples to try, I am much more inclined to buy the item or at least one of the ingredients in the recipe. Not sure how this would tie into 3GTV, but I am sure they will find a way!

  3. 1. My initial thought on "smart" grocery stores is that who has time to stop and watch these demonstrations? For me, when I go to the grocery store I'm in and out as quick as possible. I have a list and a specific brand I'm after and I get just what is on the list. I don't usually have time to just stroll around and look at things. Also, even if I did, stopping on each isle and watching one or two videos is going to make my shopping trip longer. I do like the idea of getting instant coupons but I'm already a coupon-er and always have a coupon with me that I've gotten from my Sunday paper or online so unless a product that I need and I don't have a coupon for does have an instant one then I might be more inclined to stop but if I already have a coupon I'd keep on going.

    2. I think the problem is that there is the time involved because this doesn't seem like it's quick. I feel like there are so many moms who are in a hurry and just need to grab some things for dinner and they need to get back to pick their kid up from dance or soccer and they're not going to just walk around the grocery store finding new dinner tips, etc... I also agree with what Anna said, just because it suggests Pace salsa doesn't mean people are going to buy Pace. As Anna said if there is a cheaper brand and someone is on a budget there going to buy the cheaper brand and not spend more on Pace.

    3. I think it would be more effective to have a code underneath the item that says for a coupon text "coupon" to #####. That way people can look for coupons on items they need and instantly get them on their phone versus watching a video and then get the coupon code. Another option for people who might be interested in the cooking tips would be to have an option screen that customers could press the coupon button or tips button that would pull up videos giving tips and cooking ideas.

  4. 1)Jennifer, I am just like you. I like to have a list of things I need so I can get in and out asap. Although sometimes I have walked into the grocery store not knowing what to get so I could say the idea of "Smart" grocery store could benefit a lot of people. I also like the idea of getting instant coupons on my phone. I do not use coupons often, but that is because they are the paper ones and I always forget to bring them with me.

    2) An issue that might occur with this idea is it is very time consuming. I would say the majority of people do like go to the grocery store and being in there for longer than is necessary would not be good.

    3) I like the idea that Jennifer gave, because it is a much more efficient in that you can chose the coupons that you want to use.
