Google Takes on Facebook

The company, Google, is launching a new social networking website called Google+ that is similar to Facebook.  Although this idea is a bit different from Facebook because you get to "share just the right things with just the right people."  This is so the people that you didn't want to know your business but you still want them to be your "friend" on the website, don't have to see what you are posting.

Google recently started viewing Facebook as a new, next major rival in online advertising.  Over the past year, there has been quite a debate on if Google could succeed in social networking.

Here is the article:

1) Do you think this new idea from Google is going to succeed?
2) What is their target market?
3) Do you think it will honestly "out-do" Facebook? And what could be some possible improvements to possibly be better than Facebook?

  1. I am excited about Google's new endeavor. I truly believe that Google can do it and completely disagree with the comment in the article, "social media is not in Google's 'DNA'". I am amazed at how many different avenues Google has taken on already including the Droid cell phone, email, and Sketch Up (a rival to CAD for architects and interior designers)- three products that have nothing to do with their original product- the search engine. So, why couldn't they be successful with Google +??

They will have many who are reluctant to switch over or the people like me who would want to have both at first, but dread the thought of having to manage both. And, if I switch over, are my friends, family members, and coworkers going to switch over too? If not, I won't have many connections. It would be nice if I could friend someone from my Google + from Facebook. If this were possible, I would still have my social network, but I would have the protections and group settings available to me with Google +.

  2. I think that Google is such a powerful research tool that people will have a hard time seeing it as a social networking site as well. However, on the other hand, Google has all the tools and power to succeed. For example, after reading this article I asked my boyfriend about this site and he offered me an invite, which of course I accepted. I think that their have a broad target market encompasses almost anyone. Like the article said, there is almost nothing you can share with your boss, professor, preacher, and friends that you see on the weekends. I'm not sure that this new site will outdo Google, but I do believe that it will certainly give Facebook a run for its money.
