Happy Social Media Day!

Today is Social Media Day.

What does this mean to you?

Do you remember our world without social media?

Do you think marketing is doing enough to embrace social media? Could it do more?

Where do you think the future of social media is going?

  1. well ... social media day doesn't really mean much to mean but i do think that social media itself is important and has changed the way we live our lives. i mean social media day is no different from pie day. free hugs day....

yea i remember the world without social media- when i was kid.... it funny to think how as a middle schooler my sister is living and growing compred to how i grew up in middle school.... she texts and gets on fb. etc and i would call me friends.... its just crazy to think back on when everyone didn't post every single thing online~

i think some companies are using social media for marketing successfully but some companies don't do enough when there is so much that can be done! videos, facebook, email, twitter, blogging, etc....

i don't think social media is going anywhere- while i think that these new technologies do have it's cons (like less privacy) there are just too many advantages to these networks...~ i think there are just going to envolves and get more and more efficient

  2. Social media is taking over our lives. My husband mentioned yesterday that the number one use of internet is now social media (as of recently!) which just now finally surpassed pornography! Considering the pornographic spam and pop-ups I used to get, I guess I can see that this was the case (the porn industry knew ppl were using the internet for it and therefore marketed their products online), but I am happy to hear that other industries have caught up to the porn industry.

I do remember a time without social media. Marketing was limited to television, radio, magazines/newspapaers, and packaging. I love that commercials and groupons are now available online. And as commercials become more obsolete (thank you, DVR!), the internet is the way to market (via YouTube, Facebook pages, Twitter). In fact, during March Madness this past year, I discovered ESPN's blog, which was actually an App on my Droid. I downloaded the App and was able to stay up on the entire tournament and see comments from sports broadcasters (such as Jay Bilas or Stuart Scott)about all of the games. ESPN was able to reach me without television via Twitter and my Droid App's.

  4. 1. I think it's funny that there is actually a day for social media but that just shows how much it has grown and is considered important in everyday lives.

    2. I do remember the days before Facebook and Twitter. It is so odd to think that for more than half of my life social media wasn't really important or even around. It is so expected these days that every company and person has either a Facebook page or Twitter account it's funny to remember back in day (more like 6-7 years ago for me) when the main form of talking to friends was telephone, not facebook or even text-messaging.

    3. I think marketing has done well using social media but it has room to grow and become an even bigger presence in social media. A lot of the reason it has done well is because the majority of people are online these days and that's where they will see marketing. Most people fast forward through commercials on TV and people rarely read newspapers and magazines to see print ads.

    4. I think social media is expanding to the point that one day every one will be online in some form whether it is through Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.. I think what Dr. Mishra said in class about LinkedIn becoming the only source for resumes is true and I really can see that happening.

  5. To be honest, I would have never thought social media would be such a big deal! It is crazy how far we have come with social media...I am not going to deny that I don't like technology or that I don't have a facebook account....however, I can say that I don't overly abuse social media tools...I believe that social media has been very effective in many positive ways, but I think it has also affected our personal face to face relationships. I miss the days when we wrote letters to one another and met for coffee without having to text every two seconds to make sure the other person is going to be there. I do believe that marketing has done a very good job getting social media out there....and I am interested to see how much bigger and more popular it is going to be even a year from now!

  6. Social Media Day isn't all that important to me. I don't use twitter and most times I go on Facebook to talk to friends not to see what's hip or cool. I do remember when MYSPACE first came out I was in middle school and had to get a middle school friend to make one for me because my mom didn't want me to have one at the time (we had emails with the same inbox so she would have found out). I think marketing is trying to catch up to social media. There are so many social networks that I feel like marketing firms are only trying to catch up to them to market their products. I think one day market firms will only have a small job to do. That the social media will cover their jobs. That they can tell one person here's our product, then that person's social media-ing will do the rest.

  7. I never knew there was a Social Media Day, and I can't say it affects me much. I do remember our world with social media, and I can say...it has changed quite a bit. I remember right towards the end of elementary school when AIM was the cool thing to have...then it was myspace...then facebook...then twitter. It has just grown so much. I also think that many children nowadays are living in a completely different generation than us. I couldn't have a cell phone until I got to high school, but now I see elementary kids have even the iPhone.

I think social media is going to continue to grow, and everybody is going to be one the computers for some reason or another. Just like Jennifer said about the comment Dr. Mishra made, resumes will no longer be in paper form. I totally agree.

  8. I can't believe we have a social media day. That alone shows how much it has grown. Everything thinkg keeps changing. Business used to be just worried about their advertisements in the newspapers, magazines, or TV; now, we the have to consider blogs and facebook profiles. It is crazy; I remeber wthen I was like 10, 11 and I was outside playing ball or riding my bike. Now, I babysit an 11 year old and she is on facebook and youtube all the time. I ask her if she wants to go outside her response is "Not right now, I'm taking to my fried on facebook." I even remember talking on the phone with my friends for hours on end and now all we do is text, and texing drives be crazy; ther is no physical or emotional expressions through text.

I think that with DVR and Netflix, social media is eventually going to be the primary way businesses market. People will get tired of commercials and buinseeis will be promoting and hiring mainly online. I agree with Amy and feel that social medial has realy affected our face to face communication; perersonally I think it will eventually stop, everything will be through texts. It will be very interesting to see where social media goes in the next 5 years.

Social media day does not necesarily mean anything to me but I do find it surprising that there is such a thing. Because such a day does exist it just goes to show that social media is very important in this day and age and is a heavy relied upon source of networking, marketing, and generally reaching your target market.

I can definetly remember the days before social media and instant messaging was the latest craze. I find it very interesting to see how the introduction of one social media network has changed the internet world drastically. Because of this businesses can now market themselves to specific target markets unlike they had been able to before. Social media networks allow businesses to connect directly with there consumers. It has become very evident that marketers have embraced this form of networking and utilize it towards their advanatage.

Becuase of this the social media industry will continue to progress and prosper with varying improvements and further gained supporters and users. In my opinion social media will takeover the internet, and business waves in the near future.
