The article that I chose for this week is entitled "Storytelling to help your career." I found this article on CNN and decided to share this with our class as I think it closely relates to what we worked on the first week of class: self-marketing. Like Dr. Mishra said, I believe that self-marketing is a skill that requires developing, but is extremely important. This article expands a little more on a certain aspect of self-marketing, storytelling. Storytelling is something that we all may think we know how to do well, but this article provides a little bit of a different spin, along with some advice. After reading this article, how well do you think you are able to storytell? Do you agree/disagree with this article's take on storytelling? Are there any other suggestions/comments you would like to add to the article?
Thanks,
Maggy

I would be scared my story would not have a purpose that is connected to the employer in which I am trying to get a job. This would make me nervous to have to tell a story because I am not creative on spot. I disagree with this article's take on storytelling because even though you don't have to have a degree in storytelling, I still think it is an inquired skill that a person has but this one skill does not make that person necessarily great or fit for the job. I found this very interesting, and I hope I won't ever have to tell a story. :)

Andy Goodman was the writer for "the Nanny" series and now helps nonprofits market themselves through storytelling. He has great ideas and many are free and available on this website.
I think I would fail at storytelling honestly. My whole life has been focused around music and now going focusing around fashion. I don't have many experiences outside of those two interests to "strytell" about. The tips that the article listed at the end make sense. I would agree that to effectively story tell you have to involve the other person. No comments from me to help the article. Other than thanks for the tips :)

ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to storytelling, I would have to say that I am a great storyteller. In terms of selling my self and adding a story along with it that is a different story. I have never considered or thought about telling a story when it comes to selling myself for a job or promotion. Reading this article actually introduced me to this idea and I find it to be very interesting and possibly beneficial. The even more interesting this is that Sunglass Hut actually trains their associates and managers to tell a story during the sales process. In which allows associates to make a connection with customers during the sales process and then ultimately the customer makes a purchase becuase of how well the associate was able to make a connection.
