Hugh Laurie as L'Oreal's new "Men Expert" Spokesmodel

Check out this video of Hugh Laurie (actor from House) who is one of the new spokesmodels for the new
L'Oreal Men Expert Line.  Not your typical commercial, but like his character on House, more raw, real, and sarcastic. Instead of showing close-ups of his skin (since he is advertising a new skin care line for men, afterall), they simply show him getting pampered and talking about beauty, being a spokesmodel, and the hard work it takes to look good (sarcastically, of course).

The filming style reminds me of The Office and other popular fake documentary type shows.  We see the "out-takes", they bleep out parts, and we can clearly see where the video has been cut throughout.  Now we are seeing this filming style in commercials!  Very clever and real- which may really appeal to men, especially since L'Oreal has been considered a women's line for so long.

1.  What do you notice about the style of this "commercial" and how will it be effective toward selling a skin care line to men?

2.  Do you see any areas for improvement?  What could they do better?

3.  How effective is Hugh Laurie as their spokesmodel?  Why do you think they chose him?

  1. I did not like this commercial. It was longer than usual and I do not feel like it did a very good job of holding the audience's attention. I also felt like this commercial could do a much better job of selling their product. They are selling skin care and showed nothing of this guy's skin. Maybe I just feel this way because I'm a girl, but I don't think this commercial would be effective for men either, especially considering how long it is. I do not know any guy that could sit through a minute and a half commercial pertaining beauty. I think that they could do a better job if it was shorter and more to the point. I don't find Hugh Laurie as a very effective spokesperson either. He was very sarcastic and dull in a way. I'm not really sure why he was chosen. (very negative post haha)

  2. I also did not like this commercial at all. I got very tired of watching it, and I felt like Hugh Laurie was very monotone. If I would have watched that commercial without knowing what it was about in the first place I would not know because it did not show anything about skin care. The lady was doing his nails...To improve this commercial they could show something about skin care, or show what it is suppose to do for the the skin and how it would benefit the consumer. I did not like Hugh Laurie as a spokesmodel because he was too dry and it got boring listening to him, but his show is very popular so that might be why they chose him.

  3. I watch House on USA all the time when there is nothing else to watch, it was so weird to hear Hugh Laurie to speak in a british accent!

    1) The style of the commerical was very laid back and I think it will attract men because me are very laid back. They're not into glitz and glamour and how they look. I think this commerical portrayed it well. I'm not sure if it will be effective or not. This commercial was meant for men in the UK not men in the USA so I don't know if men in the UK would respond to this commerical or not.

    2) I think they could make the commercial flow better. with no bleeps.

    3) I am not sure why they chose Hugh Laurie he is a British actor but acts in an American show. I'm not sure how he would influence the UK public.
