Nike Commercial "Clock Tower"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ceUrljw3_EE

The commercial I chose to do for my post is advertising Nike. I like this commercial because I feel like it is especially powerful. I feel like it does a really good job of capturing and holding my attention, making me want to continue watching in order see how these video clips related to the product. This commercials shows several video clips, of all amazing events in sports history, legendary events. At the end of the commercial the phrase, "There is no Cinderella," is extremely motivating to me. It reminds me that no one is going to hand my future to me, that I have to work hard to accomplish my goals. Nike is encouraging us to go after our dreams and accomplish our goals through hard work. This is more than just the typical sports apparel commercial. I do not even enjoy sports and I still love this commercial.

What do you dislike/like about this commercial? Do you feel like Nike is successful in conveying a powerful message? Do you think this commercial has a specific target audience or do you find it do be conveying a general message? What do you think could Nike could have done better?

  1. This is a really powerful commercial. I really like it because it does show legendary sports moments but also clips of teams and players practicing. I think it sends a great message that success comes with hard work and practice. Like you said, your future isn't handed to you. I think Nike is successful in conveying the message to both athletes and non-athletes. I think the commercial was targeted for athletes especially younger athletes who want to be in the pros one day to show them what it takes to be like the greats. However I think the message applies to everyone because no matter what it is that someone wants to do they have to work hard to achieve their goals. Since this is a sporting commercial I don't really see anything else Nike could have done better. Maybe they could do another commercial with different recognizable athletes and coaches (wearing Nike) saying Hard Work and you just see it keep going through say 6-7 diff. people and then at the end that Cinderella message would appear. I don't know if that would be as effective, just an idea.

  2. I thought this commercial had a lot of meaning. I liked how it showed significant sports memories, but it did not show any woman sports memories. I did not like that part about it because Nike makes women's shoes that are worn for sports. I agreed with Maggy about the commercial conveying that the future is not handed to you, and you have to work hard to accomplish your goals. The specific target audience to me for this commercial is just male athletes, but it also targets other audiences about how one has to work hard to achieve what they want. I think Nike could have put some women in the commercial because women also play sports, and they also have goals that they are trying to reach in life. I know there are plenty of great women sports memories that could be added.

  3. I believe the target audience for the clock tower commercial is young males. The boys who dream of growing up to be the next Michael Jordan or even surpass him.

"There is no Cinderella"? This statement confused me for the entire commercial. The only thing I got from that statement was the clock tower struck twelve.

I have yet to meet a man or boy who bought the whole Cinderella story. Cinderella is targeted toward females, teaching them to search for their Prince Charming. Would you really search for Prince Charming in Nikes. The statement would fit a Manolo Blahnik commercial better.

The commercial would have been effective without the Cinderella statement. Or a different statement, maybe a "Hail Mary" statement since some sport games are a "Hail Mary" win.

This was better than the next few commercials. I'm glad Nike did not air the Freddy Krueger Commercial.

  4. I agree with everyone saying that this commercial was powering. What I didn't like about it and what I think was mentioned in class is that there were no females showcased in this commercial. Which makes me feel that Nike is only interested in men...
I think that the message "There are no Cinderellas" could have been taken two different ways. 1) There are no Cinderellas aka women 2)You have to work hard to reach your dreams
I think to improve this commercial Nike could have added females to it
